Not to be confused with the popular Chinese restaurant Luk Yuen, Luk Foo only has one branch (as far as I'm aware of... I could be wrong. I haven't seen it elsewhere) and it is right in front of Duty Free Shopping Mall in Parañaque. It is as you would expect any Chinese restaurant that's been there for quite a while: a little run down, smelling of bleach, the toilet (which is right next to the counter/kitchen, hmm) smells strongly of urinal cake... But somehow, families find themselves flocking to Luk Foo every time there's a big occasion... Or rather, anytime they want to eat Chinese food that's not just dumplings. Luk Foo has some of the best and affordae Chinese cuisine I've ever had. They're particularly known for the fresh sea food they have swimming in the tanks outside the restaurant. Our family always orders the steamed grouper (Lapu-Lapu), prawn with garlic sotanghon and salt and pepper crab. You won't regret ordering a full seafood menu, they're all fresh from the tanks! And if you're at a loss with what to order, you can always ask the waitresses or the manager, because they give pretty damn good recommendations. This is a good place to celebrate any occasion-- just as long as you're not bothered with how gritty it is.

I can't even count on my fingers the number of times we've celebrated birthdays in Luk Foo. While I am not a fan of Chinese cuisine, this one happens to be a family favorite. We ended up here one time after a shopping spree in Duty Free just right across the road. We were so surprised at how good everything was we now automatically go here if we have anything to celebrate. The service is fast and friendly. We travel and eat with three kids and they don't mind the noise or the little tykes running around after we eat. We are often able to calm them down by taking them to watch the fish and shrimp outside (without letting them know that those would soon be someone's dinner, of course). What I really can't get enough of is the excellent combination of their Yangchow Fried Rice and the Salt and Pepper Spareribs. I swear, they have the best Salt and Pepper Spareribs, ever. It's crunchy, does not have too much bone or cartilage and has this amazing breading of salt and spicy peppers. If you're in a celebratory mood, add an order of their birthday noodles or their crispy canton and you'll end up with a very happy tummy.

I never really paid attention to Luk Foo. I thought of it as the restaurant that was everlastingly attached to a Puregold grocery, nothing more. My loyalty to Luk Foo was sparked by destiny. It was a particularly traffic day, we had just passed by Puregold for a refill of random items because it was just a few minutes drive from home. Then I was attacked.. attacked by intense hunger pangs. It was on that day that I discovered that Luk Foo's Taro Puff rivals those of the expensive Chinese restaurants. They serve it fresh, crispy and generously stout. I've even had them packed for my lunch the next day, and the cold dried up Taro Puff was still wonderful. Who knew that my favorite Chinese dish that I thought to be almost extinct was practically my neighbour? We've been living so close to each other for so long, I have to make up for lost time.
